Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a complete system of medicine with its own forms of diagnosis and treatment that has a history of 2,500 years and is widely used in China and throughout Europe and North America.

TCM helps restore the body to health by treating the imbalances detected through Chinese diagnosis, these imbalances can go on to become the illnesses or diseases which we now know of in modern medicine.

The Chinese have the longest, existing continuous medical system in the world. Although the terminology used in TCM may seem strange it has a very real place in modern treatment. TCM developed through long term careful observation of the body, symptoms and responses to treatment creating a valuable, natural and supportive system of healing. Chinese herbs are widely researched for their positive results with many medical conditions including cancer and autoimmune diseases and acupuncture is a proven therapy for the relief of many conditions including back pain.

TCM believes that illness and pain occur when the Qi (vital energy of the body) cannot move freely through the body. Acupuncturists select specific points on the body to treat your symptoms and their underlying causes. They insert very fine needles into those points. This restores the flow of Qi and triggers the natural healing response. Chinese herbs (in capsules for easy ingestion) may be given alongside the acupuncture sessions to support acupuncture treatment or by themselves.

Chinese Herbal Medicine

Chinese herbs are a fundamental part of TCM either complementing acupuncture treatment or as a stand-alone therapy following the same principles of restoring balance. They have been used in China for over 2000 years (most medications have only been in existence for less than 100 years). This means that their properties are well understood and their safety has been fully tested and documented. All herbs given are plant-based and several herbs are combined in order to make them more effective and reduce any potential side effects. Dr Jessica can prescribe an appropriate formula of herbs for you to support your treatment based on your individual characteristics & symptoms. Depending on the severity of your symptoms she may give you capsules or loose herbs to brew into a tea. All her herbs are obtained from approved suppliers and reputable companies. Dr Jessica is registered with the CMIR (Chinese Medicine Institute and Register).

What are Chinese Herbs?

Chinese herbs are made from plants (no animal products are used in the UK). They can be given in their dried form to be made into a tea or for ease taken in capsules after being ground into powder. The slider below shows some herbs and what they would be traditionally used for in TCM:

The cure of many diseases is unknown to physicians…
because they are ignorant of the whole. For the part can never be well unless the whole is well.
